Though I never was a fashionista, I really enjoyed doing my hair, makeup and nails at varying stages of my adolescence. My favorite thing to do was paint my nails—probably because I chose dark, bold shades of black, green, and blue that made my uncles frown at me. “Did you drop a can of green beans on your toes?” I remember one drawling at me. It was a way I could rebel without really making anyone angry.
